True story: A friend of a friend of mine is a knockout with legs that go on for miles. One night, we girls decided to get together for a little karaoke singing and, of course, dancing. Ms. Gams (as I shall call her to protect her identity) wore a short, striking red dress. So striking that when she was out on the dance floor getting her grove on, she caught the dj's eye to which he replied "hello red dress". Just goes to show you how amazing and powerful red (and a red dress at that) can be :)

Can you believe that Valentine's Day is about a week away?!??! Where did February go (and January for that matter)? Andy and I don't have anything special planned quite yet but I would love to catch a movie. I've been eying The Vow ... nothing like a good old romantic plot (based on a true story!) to fan those flames of love. I would also adore receiving a box of Sees chocolates (I got hook on them over the holidays and have decided that they are the best chocolates I have ever tasted). Hint, hint :)

highs and lows

It's been snowing here (as you can see) and the dogs have been in heaven. Apparently, snow is all the rage when it comes to hot trends in dogdom :). Last night Andy and I watched The Usual Suspects, an older movie but soooo good (if you are a thriller/mystery fan, you are in for a ride!). We also enjoyed "breakfast for dinner" ... pumpkin spice pancakes, sasuage links, and scrambled eggs (Andy's a rock-star when it comes to making eggs ... his eggs are the.best.ever!)

When I first saw this dress on Ruche (similar style), I was instantly smitten. I fell in love with the interesting hem line ... it's a bit higher in the front and scoops down a bit in the back and it is the perfect shade of misty, muted turquoise. I opted to pair it with rose patterned tights, a creamy knit cardigan (thrifted) and a Here Kitty necklace from BrideBlu. I am slightly obsessed with all things cat related ... partly because I go by "Cat" and partly because I just love the little furry munchkins (but only from afar ... Andy is super allergic, unfortch)

On a related note, I am so psyched that today is Wednesday ... only two more days until the weekend. Hooray!

I adore turquoise ... it is such a lovely, stunning color and is said to be the stone of wisdom and spiritual journeys. These gorgeous turquoise dagger drops were just begging to be turned into earrings. I adore their sweet golden filigree caps and already can picture wearing them with maxi dressed and strappy sandals come summer. However, while old man winter is around, pairing them with a simple back turtleneck will do just fine.

A couple of weekends ago my mom and I took a beading class to learn a Japanese form of braiding called Kumihimo. Using satin cording and a special braiding disk, you carefully work your way around the round board crossing the satin cords over one another and a stunning round braiding pattern emerges! The class was loads of fun and, I couldn't resist from picking up the supplies to make a few more in different colors ... yea!

Over the holiday season, I was fortunate enough to have one of my vendors generously send me a box of assorted cupcakes from the famously delicious Georgetown Cupcake. With practically equal parts frosting and cake, let me tell you, they were nothing short of amazing. My favorite flavor (though, I feel a bit plain jane to even share this) was Vanilla Birthday (Classic madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcake topped with a traditional sweet vanilla buttercream frosting and rainbow sprinkles). It is taking all my will-power not to order up another dozen right now ... yum!

Every since I was a little girl, I have been enamored with miniature things. In fact, when I was younger, I even convinced my mom to get me a dollhouse after which I promptly started to purchase furniture and accessories to fill it up (sadly, I never really furnished it but I sure did have fun shopping for miniatures!).

A month or so ago, I stumbled across the most adorable collection of pewter charms and my passion and love for minis was ignited again (miniature tigers, dragons, pinecones, squirrels, kitties ... yes, please!). I finally got around to turning them into necklaces which can now be found at BrideBlu in a new section called Charm School.

Resolutions

With the start of the new year (I seriously cannot believe that 2012 is here, you guys!) comes a fresh start, a new beginning. I didn't officially make resolutions come January 1st but I have been thinking about life lately and, more importantly, at the end of the day, what matters most. For me, it's my family (hubs) and friends. We have a multi-opening picture frame hanging in our living room that says: the most important things in life, aren't things (nestle among pictures of hubs and I with family/friends). I love this saying and truly try to incorporate this mantra into my daily life (not to say that I don't appreciate material things ... especially new clothes, cosmetics, or jewelry :). So, 2012, let this be the year of appreciating "non-things" and finding treasures in the every day.

Giraffes!

Andy and I are avid zoo goers. So much so, that a few years ago, we started purchasing an annual pass so that we could frequent the zoo as much as our hearts desire. Always hungry to learn some interesting animal facts, we are also that couple who stops and reads EVERY zoo sign. Today, I thought it might be fun to bring to light a little bit of zoo-inspired animal facts about Giraffes (found via), along with a little handmade inspiration of course!

Some fun facts about Giraffes ...

Their tongues are black and can be 18 inches long
During birth, a baby giraffe will fall approximately 6 feet before hitting the ground
Giraffe's have a unique jugular vein which contains a series of one way valves that prevent the back flow of blood when the Giraffe's head is down to drink water, preventing the Giraffe from blacking out.

I have always been a bit partial to Giraffes as not only do they remind me of leggy, gentle giants (oh my ... their big eyes, with long fluffy lashes are so amazing!) but also, they are my mom's favorite animal.

Ring around the collar necklace {made!}

Collars are popping up everywhere these days ... peter pan, lace, velvet ... I love them all! They add a bit of playful whimsy and tend to make an outfit look a little bit less serious. With a small collection jewelry tools, some chain, and jump rings, you can make a collar necklace in less than an hour! This is such a simple project and, when you are finished, you can wear it with just about anything your heart desires.

What you'll need:

24" of chain
4 smaller sized (4-5mm) open jump rings
1 larger jump ring (8-9mm)
Lobster claw clasp
Jewelry tools: a bent nose needle-nose pliers, flat nose pliers, and a wire cutter (or you can just buy a beginners set)

STEP 1: Take your chain and hold it loosely around your neck to determine the length you want for your necklace. NOTE: collar necklaces are meant to be worn a bit closer to the base of your neck, so you will most likely make your collar necklace shorter than a traditional necklace. Using your wire cutters, cut the chain to your desired length.

STEP 2: Finish your necklace by attaching the large jump ring to one end of the chain. On the other end, attach your clasp with a smaller jump ring. NOTE: this is where having jewelry tools makes light work ... use your bent needle nose pliers to firmly grasp on side of the jump ring. Then, using your flat nose pliers, twist the jump ring apart. Repeat to close.

STEP 3: Now it is time to add the "collars" to your necklace. Using the remaining chain, cut two equal lengths (~ 5" each). Find the exact middle of your necklace (folding the necklace in half). Open one of your smaller jump rings and, using your bent nose pliers to hold the jump ring loop one end of one "collar" in followed by the center point of your necklace followed by one end of the other "collar".

STEP 4: Attach the other ends of each piece of "collar" to the necklace using your remaining jump rings.

Viola! Your collar necklace is ready for the world :)

Handmade Scarves + Sweater Dresses

After enjoying some time off during the holiday season, it was back to the grind yesterday for me. Vacation ending is always bitter sweet because, while I love my job, I really adore spending full days just hanging out with hubs ... watching movies, visiting friends, running errands, and playing Scrabble (he always wins but I always expand my vocabulary each time we play). To lessen the blow of transitioning back into the 9-5, I opted to wear my *new* faux fur scarf ... I LOVE it. It is warm, cuddly, and I can't help but feel a bit glamorous in it to boot.

Faux Fur Infinity Scarf {made!}

Inspired by all of the cozy looking faux fur winter accessories (but a little put off by their high price tags) and infinity scarves ... I thought it might be fun to combine the two by making a faux fur infinity scarf! This project is VERY easy (takes less than an hour to complete!) and super inexpensive (especially if you use one of those frequent 50% single item coupons that JoAnn's Fabric or Michael's has ... I scored the faux fur I used for under $4!!!).

What you'll need:

1/2 yard of faux fur fabric (36 - 44" wide)
Thread to match
Scissors
Pins
Sewing Machine

STEP 1: Fold fabric in half the long way with right sides together. Pin and stitch ~1/2" in from edge.

STEP 2: Fold up one end ~1". Pin and stitch. Repeat on other side.

STEP 3: Turn right-side-out. Tuck in one end into the other to form a "circle" with the scarf and stitch closed.

Viola ... in 3 simple steps you now have a luxurious faux-fur infinity scarf ... perfect for keeping your neck warm and toasty (and your look totally stylish) in the icy cool winter days that lay ahead.

Every year my mom and I set aside a Saturday or Sunday in December and dedicated to Christmas cookie baking. We make the same tried and true favorites (sour cream cutouts, peanut butter kiss cookies, dipped pretzels) and always add on a few new recipes to keep things interesting. After we are done, we make up cookie boxes for everyone who has touched our lives over the past year (neighbors, friends, coworkers, mail men, UPS drivers, etc.). A Flying Adventure

Last Friday, Andy flew us up to the Twin Cities to visit some friends (I definitely appreciate and recognize how rad it is that Andy is a talented and adventurous pilot!). It was a lovely day. But, like most cross country flights (as we are learning), this flight was not without adventure. Above is a view from the cockpit as we were leaving Milwaukee (I will never get tired of looking at cloudscapes, they are just magical!). Andy took the liberty of snapping a self portrait of us in all of our flying gear glory (yes, we really are a bit dorky :).

What are you up to this weekend? Any adventures ahead? I am very much looking forward to attending a holiday party tomorrow night and, on Sunday, my family is gathering for our annual Christmas cookie baking session ... yumm!

Make a spectacle of yourself

Do you remember the dreaded "vision test" day in grade school? Once a year, we would all congregate in the gym and be given vision exams (via the standard wall chart). On testing day, I would wish and wish to pass knowing the odds were against me as both my parents have needed to wear glasses for most of their lives ... I didn't want to have to wear glasses!

In 5th grade, I failed the exam (I was so bummed!) so my mom and I payed a visit to our eye-doctor shortly thereafter. Dreading the idea of wearing eyeglasses, I talked my mom into letting me get contacts instead. Fast forward to today and I really enjoy wearing glasses some days (not only to give my eyes a break from contacts but because there are so many awesome, stylish frames out there!).

I would adore having a few different pairs of prescription eyeglasses to choose from to fit my mood that particular day. The only problem is ... when you order glasses it can be so expensive! I really, really wanted to snap these outfit pictures outside but, as I was getting ready, I could hear the wind howling outside and just knew Mother Nature had called the game so we had to make do with an inside photo sesh (the lighting is so tricky! ... other fashion bloggers ... how do you do it?!?!?)

See those boat pictures hanging on the wall behind me? They were painted by Andy's late grandfather, George! Andy and I are both madly in love with them. As the family story goes ... they were actually paint-by-numbers but George did such a meticulous job with his brush that you wouldn't even know it (sometimes I almost think I see the waves of the ocean move!).

I have also been doing a bit of jewelry making lately. I came across a handful of *new* vintage brass bow findings the other day which were just begging to be turned into necklaces You know, I never used to be too crazy girlie things (like bows) but lately, I can't seem to get enough of them!

Awkward confession ... I honestly couldn't find my way out of a cardboard box. I am terrible with directions and rely heavily on Andy to help get me from point A to point B (he actually hand-draws me the sweetest and most helpful of maps and I save them all in my glove box). Oh my ... it is officially December! Andy and I started our chocolate advent calendar today (you know, the cardboard calendars with the little pieces of chocolate hanging out behind doors?). It also means I have the formal "green light" to exclusively play our holiday playlist on the iPod during all of our road-trips from now until Christmas (can't wait to listen to Baby It's Cold Outside by Dean Martin).

On the big turkey day, I wore my newest vintage find ... an over-sized sweater. Super comfy, cozy and plenty roomy to allow for a bit of pumpkin pie indulgence. Andy and I are one of those crazy couples who still double dip on Thanksgiving ... hitting up my family's gathering first, followed by a second feast with Andy's family. It is all about pacing yourself :)

I opted to add a simple gold linked vintage bracelet. I adore bracelets ... especially stacking them up as I enjoy hearing them clink together (I know ... weird, right?).

Rifle Paper Co.

Hubs and I ran into a dear, older friend a few days ago. After greeting him warmly, I asked him how he was doing. "Can't complain, I'm on the right side of the sod", he replied. This got me thinking about how life can be such a whirlwind of activity and stress: bills to pay, errands to run, to-do lists to check, obligations to uphold. But, at the end of each day it is important to remember not to sweat the small stuff and, instead, take the time to appreciate all the good in your life ... friends, family, and the fact that you have lived another day on "the right side of the sod".

A few weeks ago, I realized that I didn't have enough tight options in my possession. I mean, sure I had a good collection of basics to work with in greys, blacks, and browns to work with but I was craving some bolder colors. I found that Forever 21 has a heck of a selection and their prices are phenomenal. I scored this rust colored pair and was presently surprised when it paired up so nicely with my new dress from Frock and Feather.

I was helping my mom clear out her jewelry box a while back when we came across this sweet gold heart necklace. My mom fondly remembered wearing it when she was in her twenties. A couple of years ago, during my annual pilgrimage to the Mall of America with my aunt and mom, I discovered Gilly Hicks (a sister store to the more well known Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister). Their store (and website) is full of fun & flirty bras, undies, and lounge wear. The quality is top-notch and the prices super affordable (hint: make sure to sign up on their email list ... they are almost always having a great sale!).

A couple of weekends ago some dear friends of ours came to visit. As if seeing them and catching up wasn't enough, they came bearing this AH-MAZ-ING home-made apple pie. It was beyond delish ... seriously I think that "day jobs" should be quit and a baking profession pursued.

The crust (which, to me, is the absolute trickiest part of pie-making to nail) was perfection ... perfectly crisped, buttery, and delectibly flaky.

Oh my, this pie is going to haunt my dreams ...

My beauties, I am so sorry for being MIA these past few days. Both Andy and I came down with nasty colds leaving us feel much unlike our usual energetic, playful selves. Being sick is the pits but it is even worse when a glorious autumn is taking place outside while you are trapped inside coughing and sniffling (boo).

Luckily, we both woke up this morning feeling a bit more like ourselves and decided that there is no better cure than snagging a little fresh air. So we took Juice for a walk in the woods which are part of an old seminary (Andy's dad attended in his younger years). It is so hard to believe that this stunning setting it nestle just moments from our house in the city. Nature was displaying her autumn colors creating a landscape that rivaled a Monet.

A few weeks ago I happened across the most lovely of giveaways hosted by the delightful Jennifer. Excitedly, I threw my name in the hat (I seriously NEVER win anything but you can't win if you don't play) and, a few days later, imagine my shock (which was quickly followed by giddy excitement) when I happened by her blog and saw that I had won!

Part of my prize were these crazy chic Thank-You notes pictured above (love that chevron style and the bright, sherbet color palette almost as much as I love a good old hand-written thank-you note!). Leg warmers take me right back to my childhood ballet classes. Surprisingly, they can look quite grown up when paired with tall boots or layered over tights. My legs are starting to feel nice and toasting just thinking about it!

I've mentioned my lack of creativity when it comes to my long locks before. Ummm ... guilty of wearing it tied back the vast majority of the time? ... yup. Well, at the very least, my longer haired friends, we can say farewell to the ponytails, buns and braids finished off with plain-jane hair elastics. Bonus ... when these hair-ties are not holding your hair, they look extra cute on your wrist (a perfect excuse for those of you who are growing your hair out).

I remember as kid how important (and fun!) picking out a Halloween costume was. Lucky for me, my mom was super crafty and made most of our costumes. I fondly remember trick or treating in a poodle skirt and saddle shoes, as a 80's rocker (I temporarily got to color my hair pink!), and as a flower child (my mom had saved a gorgeous dress she had worn in the 60s and it fit me like a glove).

What an incredible clutch ... I adore the fold-over frame and it is crafted from gentle glazed leather. I just know that it would make my autumn wardrobe, well, extra-autumny // an incredible cute and fun fox hat to keep your ears toasty // a rust colored vintage dress which would look amazing with sweater tights and tall boots // my stomache has been grumbling every since I clicked the *favorite* button on these delicous looking cookie-wiches
